BEEVILLE — The Tuloso-Midway Warrior middle school basketball teams were in town on Jan. 14 to tangle with the Moreno Middle School Trojans, and the Beeville boys recorded three wins in the four games played.

The 7A Trojans walloped the Warriors 44-20. The Beeville boys jumped out early and led 16-8 after one quarter and never looked back. The pressure defense led to several fast-break opportunities that the young Trojans cashed.

Leading the way for the Trojans were Thomas Dang and Blake Casares with nine points. Dolton Corpus followed with eight markers. Every Trojan contributed to the win. Joesea De la Cruz sank six points. Isaiah Moreno and Jacob Flores each made four tallies. Bryan Lucio and Elijah Rodriguez both added a basket in the win. It was the biggest scoring output in district play for the Trojans.

“The boys were able to capitalize on many Warrior turnovers as they were excited to finally get back into action and play another team other than scrimmaging each other,” said coach Ernest Gonzales.

The 7B squad had to rally to make a game of it late in the second half, but the Warriors were able to convert a few late baskets to pull away from the Trojans to post a 28-20 victory.

The Trojans trailed by seven at the half, but cut that lead to just one point in the second half before T-M pulled away at the end of the game.

“We missed too many free throws that could have kept us in the game; aside from that, no one can know the effort that these boys give each time they step on the court,” said coach Tim San Miguel.

Jaiden Chapa and B.J. Barrera led the team with six points apiece. Aaron Gonzales added four and Wyatt Blackwell and EJ Valdez each tallied a bucket.

The 8B Trojans fought from way behind to record a 41-34 victory. The visitors hit for 17 first period points, while the Trojans were slow to start with only two. The lead grew to 17 points, but the Trojans chipped away at it over the third quarter and then blitzed the Warriors 21-4 in the final period to earn the win.

Alfredo Benavides provided a much needed spark off the bench to start the second half. Benavides’ aggressive play got him to the free throw line in the fourth quarter 10 times, and he made six of the attempts. A.J. Gomez added 11 points in the fourth quarter alone and 15 overall. Benavides finished with eight points, while Johnathan Carillo hit for six.

Kolton Wright followed with five markers, and R.J. Gonzalez added four. Joseph Rodriguez contributed two points, while Timothy Rincon added a free throw.

Moreno’s undefeated 8A team blasted the Warriors 51-22 in a battle of 3-0 district teams coming into the fray. Beeville led 27-11 at the half, and the fast-paced offense kept the Warriors off balance the rest of the way.

The win improves the 8A team’s record to 4-0 in district and 7-0 overall on the season.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Justin Cantu with 18 tallies. Nick Gonzales added 15 points, while Adolf Garcia had six. Jordan Cantu and Jacob Castro both came in with four. Augie Canas tossed in two, and Bryan Reyna and James Graham each had one point.

“Steve Barrera and Michael Virrata helped out tremendously on the defensive side of the ball. The Trojans have been playing great team ball so far,” said coach Ricardo Maldonado.

“Our defense is wearing down our opponents and, offensively, we are setting up one possession at a time and working the ball around to our open shooters.”

The MMS boys are back in action on the hardwoods tonight (Wednesday) at Flour Bluff.
