PETTUS — The Eagle varsity lost on Tuesday night in a well-played game with Runge, 37-35.

The Eagle varsity basketball team has been involved in nothing but nail-biters over their last three contests. They went into triple overtime against Three Rivers and got the win. A last second shot by Kenedy topped the Eagles, and on Tuesday, the Eagles had two shots to tie with less than nine seconds left on the clock, but the shots failed to fall and the Yellowjackets escaped with the victory.

“I feel that this was one of our best games of the season. Our young men played their hearts out for 32 minutes, and their effort on defense was outstanding,” said Eagle head coach Tony Ferguson.

“Obviously, I am extremely proud of our team, the teamwork, overall effort and unselfishness they exhibited was remarkable.”

Pettus grabbed an early 12-8 lead after one quarter, but the Yellowjackets edged in front by one, 19-18, at the halftime break. Pettus regained the lead at 26-25 heading into the final quarter, but the Runge boys hung on and escaped with the win.

Kyle McJunkins led the offense with 12 points. Eric Montez followed with nine markers. Matt Gonzales contributed eight, and Clay Brown hit for six on two three-point jumpers.

The Eagles were in Yorktown on Friday night and will play host to Falls City on Tuesday night.
