BEEVILLE — The City Council was scheduled to call elections for Wards 1 and 5 during Tuesday evening’s meeting at City Hall.

But local attorney George P. “Trace” Morrill, III had already filed for the Ward 1 position that morning.

Morrill, 36, will seek the seat currently held by Mayor Pro Tem Mike Scotten.

Scotten had hinted to staff members at City Hall that his increasing workload had made it harder for him to keep up with his City Council demands.

Morrill is the son of former District Attorney George P. “Jeeper” Morrill, II and has maintained an office here for the past several years.

He recently was appointed to a position on the Beeville Water Supply District board to replace the late Bill Grigsby.

Ward 5 is represented by Councilwoman Florette “Libby” Spires, a local accountant.

She has not yet filed for re-election.
