MATHIS – The Bobcat varsity baseball nine got some very good pitching from right-hander Jonathan Hernandez to help capture their district opener 4-2 over the Pirates.

“We had a goal of starting the district season off 1-0 and accomplished that. We knew it would be a tough game and that pitching and defense would be the key,” said S-T head coach Cody Fields.

Hernandez went the distance on the mound, giving up two earned runs to the home team. Mathis scored single runs in the third and in the sixth against the Bobcat hurler.

“Jon did a great job on the mound attacking the strike zone. He let the defense make plays behind him,” Fields said.

Skidmore-Tynan gained control of the game with three early first inning runs. The Bobcats got an insurance run in the sixth to lead 4-1 when the Pirates scored their final run of the contest.

Bobcat T.J. Amador had a big night at the plate, going 2-4 with two RBI’s. Sebastian Hernandez was 1-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.

“We struggled swinging the bat tonight, but we had good at bats when we needed them. We took walks and moved runners around the bases when we needed to,” Fields said.

“We still need to take better approaches at the plate.”

The Bobcats played host to Taft on Friday night and will travel to Banquete on Tuesday evening.
