MATHIS – The Skidmore-Tynan varsity Lady Cats opened district play on Tuesday and the Lady Pirates escaped with a 4-0 softball win.

Mathis jumped on the S-T girls early and moved three runners across home plate in the first inning. Another run came across in the bottom of the sixth as insurance.

“This was a well-played game, and our tough defense left the Lady Pirates scoreless through four of the innings. Dominique Vera led the defense with a good pitching performance by allowing only four Mathis hits for the evening,” said softball head coach Ophelia De Los Santos.

Vera recorded one strikeout in the game and just four base knocks over six innings of work in the circle for the Lady Cats.

One of those hits was a first inning home run that produced the Mathis runs. Reagan Crittenden, Dolores Hinojosa and Vera picked up the three hits for the Lady Cats in the contest.

Defensively, the S-T team played well.

“Ariel Garcia and Miranda Tagle followed up with several key catches in the outfield, including an assist from Miranda Tagle on another strong throw from the outfield for an out at home plate,” said De Los Santos.

“There’s a lot to take away from this game and we can only improve from here.”

The S-T girls played host to Taft on Friday night. On Tuesday, the S-T squads will travel to Banquete.
