PETTUS – The Lady Eagle varsity softball team is starting to swing some big bats and that translated into a split of their two most recent games.

Perennial powerhouse Woodsboro captured a 15-5 win over the Pettus girls on Friday in Woodsboro. The local squad came back to Tuleta to cage the Yorktown Kittens 12-9 on Monday evening.

The Lady Eagles vs. other Eagles contest was close through the first four innings. In fact, the Pettus girls owned a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Woodsboro plated four runners in the home half of the inning to grab a 6-5 lead. The big inning came in the fifth as the Woodsboro batters struck for six runs and then followed up with another three runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 10-run rule win.

Abby Cantu batted 1 for 3, with one run scored. Tristian Moore went one for two at the plate with a big two-run round-tripper. Moore also reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Hana Kruger walked once and scored for the Pettus girls. Ashlynn Schauer was a perfect 3-3 with two runs scored in the game. Destiny Carrillo had two hits in three trips to the plate with one RBI. Madi Garza went 1-3 with an RBI.

In Monday’s contest, the Kittens scored three runs in the first to get an early lead but the Lady Eagles answered with a two-run first to trail by one.

Pettus hurler Hana Kruger set down the Kittens in the second and the Pettus offense struck for three more runs to gain a 5-3 lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, as the Kittens roared back with a big four-run third to regain the lead at 7-5.

Pettus tied things up in the fourth with two runs and it was 8-8 after both teams scored single runs in the fifth. It was still a toss-up as Kruger again blanked the Kittens in the sixth. Her offense came through for her and tagged the Yorktown hurler for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the Lady Eagles on top for good 12-8.

Yorktown rallied for one run in the top of the seventh but it fell way short as the Lady Eagles got the final out without any more damage to capture the victory.

Kruger got the win in the circle for the Pettus girls. Abby Cantu reached base three times on two walks and an error and came around to score all three times. Moore was 3 for 4 and also reached on an error, Moore continued her hot hitting with two triples and a double in the win.

Kruger went 2-4, with two runs batted in. Ashlynn Schauer reached on an error and scored. Destiny Carrillo had one hit in three trips to the plate with an RBI. Madi Garza went 1-3 with one RBI and she scored once. Brittany Trevino was 2 for 4 with an RBI; Randi Arrisola reached base twice and scored one run.

The Lady Eagles were in Three Rivers on Tuesday night. On Tuesday evening, the Lady Eagles will hit the road for Runge to meet the Lady ’Jackets.
