EAST TEXAS – The Coastal Bend College Cougar softball squad lost all four road contests over the weekend in Lufkin and Port Arthur.

The Cougar squad was in Lufkin on Friday to tangle with Angelina College. The host Roadrunners captured game one by the score of 9-1 as the CBC women could not get their offense in gear. Defensive lapses also helped the Roadrunners as the Cougars were charged with four miscues in the field.

Briana Sandoval and Kelsi Salziger picked up the two CBC hits. Salziger’s was a double. She then stole third and raced home on a wild pitch to score the Cougars’ lone run of the contest. Annie Badillo took the loss in the circle for the Cougars, giving up three earned runs.

In game two on Friday, the Cougars fell 11-3. The CBC women did hit better with six base hits. Sandoval led the way with a perfect 2-2 day at the plate. One hit was a double, and she stole two bases in the game and scored two runs. Yarelli Rios stroked a double that brought in another Cougar run. Samantha Cantu was 1-3 with a RBI. Salziger went 1-3 with one stolen base. Amy Macias also picked up a hit. Tamara Loftis reached safely and stole one base and scored for CBC.

Christina Vasquez and Stephanie Salinas pitched for the Cougars.

On Saturday, the Cougars were in Port Arthur to meet the Seahawks. The CBC team again struggled offensively in game one. The hosts took advantage of three CBC errors and also had seven hits in an 8-1 win. The Cougars got six hits in the contest but could not string them together for a sustained rally.

Sandoval, Salziger, Danielle Doria and Alyssa Smith each had one hit in the contest. Macias came through with two hits, including a double, and knocked in CBC’s lone run. Kim Buendia scored. Loftis stole three bases for the Cougars in the game.

Chelsea Guzman took the loss for the CBC women.

The weekend’s finale was a slightly different story. The CBC bats came alive and the local ladies owned a 5-3 lead going into the final at-bats for the Seahawks. The Lamar State women rallied and put three runs across the plate in that final inning to post a come-from-behind 6-5 win.

Hernandez stroked two hits for CBC with a RBI and a run scored. Sandoval was 1-4 and a RBI. Rios, Salziger, Macias and Kim Martinez also hit safely for the Cougars. Badillo took the loss in the circle.

“After being flat in the first three games we finally started playing to our ability. We took the lead into the bottom of the seventh and just couldn’t hold it,” said CBC head coach Frank Morón.

“It was a very disappointing loss for the team because we gave it all we had.”

The Cougars will again be on the road this weekend as they travel back to East Texas to tangle with the Galveston College Whitecaps and Alvin College Chaparrals on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
