Yet, the Calhoun girls fought back in the late innings to claim a 12-10 victory.
“This was a tough loss for us. I am proud of the team for battling all night,” said head coach Jose Flores.
The visiting Lady Trojans scored a single run in the third and three more in the fifth for their 10 runs on the evening.
The Sandies chipped away at the Beeville lead in the early innings, beginning with two runs in the second and three in the third. It was a 7-5 contest with the Lady Trojans still holding the lead.
Calhoun cut another run off the lead in the fourth to enter the fifth trailing by one, 7-6.
The Beeville bats came alive again in the top half of the fifth with a three-run outburst to open up a 10-6 advantage. The Sandies responded with two runs of their own to edge closer at 10-8. Beeville failed to score in the sixth, but the Sandies had four runners cross the plate before the third out to gain their first lead of the game at 12-10.
The Lady Trojans went scoreless in the seventh and final frame to give the Sandies the narrow win.
Andrea Briseno led the Lady Trojan offense with two hits on the night and two RBI’s. Rebecca De Los Santos had one hit and two runs batted in.Rebekah Mendoza also contributed a hit and one RBI. Amanda Gonzales knocked in two runs on one hit. Lynn Puente stroked a double and was credited with two RBI’s.
The Lady Trojans played host to Calallen on Friday night and will travel to Tuloso-Midway on Tuesday evening.
