REFUGIO - This year’s Refugio Bobcat baseball team returned only four starters from last season’s (23-1, 14-0) district champion team who was ranked as high as #3 in the state before falling in the area round of the playoffs.

With many new faces and new roles, this year’s team has continued to grow and improve throughout this season. The good news is that despite the turnover and inexperience the Bobcats have continued to win games and find themselves in now familiar territory.

Currently the Bobcats are (14-2, 6-0) and in sole possession of first place in district 30-AA. They look to clinch a playoff spot for the 6th consecutive season as they also fight for a 2nd consecutive district championship (3rd in 4 years). The Bobcats have also managed to work their way up in the state polls. In the poll they are currently ranked #7. In the Texas HS Baseball Coaches’ poll the Bobcats are currently ranked #8.

Leading the Bobcats at the plate is Travis Quintanilla with a .574 batting average, 18 2Bs, and 7 SBs. Tyler Castellano leads with 4 3Bs, while Jim Lafond has 4 HRs. JW Shipp leads the team in RBIs with 19. On the mound Quintanilla is currently 5-0 with a .51 ERA and 70 Ks. Castellano is 4-0 with a 1.52 ERA and 30 Ks. Cole Van Ness is 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 24 Ks.

On Tuesday, March 26 the Bobcats hosted Tidehaven before traveling to Palacios, today, March 28 to start the second half of district play. Current standings are as follows: Refugio (6-0), Aransas Pass (4-2), Palacios (4-2), Edna (3-3), Goliad (3-3), Industrial (2-4), Bloomington (1-5), Tidehaven (1-5).
