“To my constituents of Woodsboro Independent School District,
“Hello, my name is Henry Alan Fierova and I write this letter to formally announce my intent to run for place 4 of the WISD School Board.
“With more than nine years of experience being on Woodsboro’s school board, I understand the time commitment that accompanies this position. My desire, passion, and love for WISD and this community will help me to continue to be successful in this role.
“Please allow me to give you a little history on myself. I am the son of Lupe Fierova and of the late Domingo (Billy) Fierova.
“My wife Ann and I have been married for 20 years now and we have three wonderful children; Joshua, who is a senior this year, Kasie who is a freshman, and Justin who is in the seventh grade.
“I graduated from Woodsboro in 1984 and proceeded to get an associates degree in electronics before I went to work for Transco Gas Pipeline Corp as a Communications Technician.
“I worked there for 20 years before the fall of Enron; after that several companies followed suit. Transco was one of many that struggled.
“Currently, I am working in Victoria for Crosstex Energy as a supervisor and I have held a leadership position there for five years.
“I am a member of St Therese Catholic Church where I am a member of the choir, a lector, the General Chairman for our annual Fall Festival, and on the church council.
“Over the years I have volunteered my time for numerous events such as coaching T-ball, helping the Lions Club, teaching catechism, and helping with the scouts.
“I am currently on the council for Troop 188 of Woodsboro, the religious leader for troop and Venture crew 188, and a committee member.
“My family and I have started a scholarship program in memory of my dad (Domingo Fierova) where we give two $1,000 scholarships to Woodsboro students each year. I have volunteered at the school for many events, past and present, and have played a prominent role for the town Christmas parade and my church.
“My nickname is “Frito” and it has been for as long as I can remember. My uncle “Polaco,” Casper Cantu, gave me that name because he said I was mischievous like the Frito Bandito in the Frito commercials they had in the 1970s. There are still many in Refugio County who don’t know Henry Fierova but they know “Frito” very well...
“My efforts as a board member have centered on serving all of the children in the community; one child is no more important than another. We are a diverse community and have to observe that diversity.
“Our schools are here to serve the educational needs of all the children. Everyone involved; parents, all district personnel Certified and paraprofessionals, and Management, as well as students, must be partners in this endeavor if we are to be successful.
“I believe that a school board must be responsive and receptive to parents, staff, students and the community at large, encouraging open door policy and communication. The board must take input from all groups and weigh all the facts before making a decision.
“A Board member is a trustee of the community that elects him or her. That Trustee must be accessible and willing to collaborate with all members of the community; that includes all District staff.
“Anyone that comes before the board has the right to be heard, not just to speak. A school board member must build public understanding, support and participation.
“In closing, much has been accomplished during my tenure as a board member and, currently, vice president of the board. Student achievement continues to improve and our district continues to be rated as recognized or academically acceptable in the Texas accountability system and Meets AYP in the Federal System (NCLB).
“The ability to build on our past successes requires a commitment to community control of our schools. Re-electing me will send a strong message to special interests that are attempting to turn the school board’s focus away from our core mission of excellence in education.
“Still, there is so much more I want to do. Please come and vote on May 9. Thank you very much for your support.”
