“We are happy to work with the San Antonio River Authority and Marathon Oil to ensure Karnes County citizens are healthy and safe and the environment stays clean,” said Karnes County Judge Barbara Shaw.
The event, supported by Marathon Oil volunteers, is being made possible through funding from Marathon Oil, SARA and Karnes County, and through cooperation with the Karnes County Sheriff’s Office.
“It’s great to see companies getting involved with local communities to keep hazardous wastes and trash out of the environment. Marathon Oil’s sponsorship exemplifies how public-private partnerships allow these kinds of events in the San Antonio River Watershed,” said SARA General Manager Suzanne Scott.
In addition to providing volunteers to work with SARA and Karnes County staff at the event, Marathon Oil donated $10,000 to SARA to help offset the cost of providing this event free to the public. The contribution from Marathon Oil was given to SARA through its non-profit partner entity, the San Antonio River Foundation.
“Marathon Oil is pleased to partner with the San Antonio River Authority and San Antonio River Foundation on this important effort that provides residents with a safe and easy way to dispose of household hazardous wastes, such as tires, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, aerosols and paint. These free public collection events help protect the environment by decreasing and discouraging improper disposal. Marathon Oil is proud to be working in Karnes County and we strive to make a positive contribution through programs that benefit the community and environment,” said Kirk Spilman, Regional Vice President with Marathon Oil.
SARA is passionately committed to the preservation, protection and sustainability of the San Antonio River Watershed and partners with local governments and other organizations on collection events throughout its four-county jurisdiction to ensure that hazardous waste and unused pharmaceuticals do not enter the watershed and end up in creeks and rivers.
