The top 26 qualifiers in the state of Texas, regardless of school size and classification competed at the meet. The top eight qualifiers, group A, threw on Saturday and the next 18 threw on Friday, group B.
Tomas threw Shot Put 59 feet 9 inches, which qualified him to throw on Saturday in the A division.
“He was the only thrower who was not from a 5A school,” said Jacob Ray, track coach.
Tomas threw a distance of 57 feet 5 inches to finish fifth.
“To put this in perspective, there are only four high school athletes in the state of Texas, class 1A through 5A, who can throw farther than our own Tomas Canchola,” Ray said. “We are extremely proud of Tomas’s accomplishment and hope for continued success the rest of the season.”
