Former Refugio resident Jimmy Canchola was named coach of the year for leading the Eden Lady Bulldogs into the third round of the 1A basketball playoffs.

The coach received the honor from the sportswriters with the San Angelo Standard-Times.

Canchola, a 98 graduate of Refugio High School, is in his seventh year of teaching and coaching. This is his first season in Eden.

His 1A girls basketball team in Eden had not been previously ranked until well into the season. Before season’s end, they were named 18th in the state by TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine.

Canchola led the Lady Bulldogs to a 21-9 record and a trip to the third round of the playoffs.

Canchola’s team was plagued with injuries and sickness for much of the season and none scored in double digits However, the girls kept winning and earned a second place in District 29A.

Canchola is the son of Pat Canchola of Refugio and Joe Soto, also of Refugio.
