VICTORIA – He was born in Refugio. He was a baseball major leaguer. He pitched seven no-hitters, having struck out 5,714 in his career. He was an MBL Hall of Famer, and he will be the guest speaker at the University of Houston-Victoria’s scholarship fundraiser Aug. 28: Nolan Ryan.

UHV athletic director Ashley Walyuchow told about 30 people at a press conference on the UHV campus Wednesday, July 17, that UHV’s head baseball coach Terry Puhl had a lot to do with getting a confirmation from Ryan.

“I had nine years experience with him as a teammate,” Puhl said.

“My most exciting time was his fifth no-hitter against the Dodgers,” he added.

In that September 1981 game, Puhl caught a long fly to save the no-hitter for Ryan.

Puhl said Ryan came up to him after the game and got in his face.

“What?” Puhl had said.

Ryan said “Thanks for catching that ball.”

Puhl said the catch can be seen on YouTube by searching for Nolan Ryan’s fifth no-hitter.

Walyuchow and Puhl worked a good two months to get Ryan to speak to their athletes and the public at the event called “Night For the Jaguars.”

The event starting at 5:30 p.m. with a silent auction at Victoria’s Riverside Stadium, features Ryan at about 7:30 p.m.

A live auction will be conducted, too.

Tickets for the event are $20 for covered grandstand stadium seats, $10 for covered grandstands bleachers and $5 for general admission.

Tickets can be purchased online at uhvjaguars.com beginning July 22, at the UHV athletic office (3302 N. Ben Wilson), by phoning 361-485-4423 or at the stadium during the night of the event.

Sponsorships beginning with $1,000 include a meet and greet Nolan Ryan opportunity. Phone Walyuchow at 361-485-4424 for more information.

The event will include the introduction of the 2013-2014 UHV student athletes for the soccer, golf, baseball and softball teams.

Ryan will impart his expertise to student athletes and the public during his presentation.

The event will conclude with the live auction, featuring an autographed UHV jersey Ryan intends to wear during his appearance.

Currently, Ryan is the CEO of the Texas Rangers and is part owner of the Round Rock Express and Corpus Christi Hooks.
