RHS boys tennis team captures district, girls tie for second

The boys tennis team won the district championship for the fourth year in a row with 35 points at the District Tennis Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, April 6 and 7. The girls team tied for second with 25 points.

Several Refugio athletes qualified to advance to the regional tournament in San Antonio on April 23 and 24..

In Monday’s play, Dylan Myers won second in singles, Tanner Myers and Cody Steele took second place in doubles to qualify for regionals.

Stormy Brock and Jace Sternadel won first place in mixed doubles during Tuesday’s tournament. Megan Montemayor and Haylee Sowell came back from a Monday loss to win two matches on Tuesday and placed second in doubles. These two doubles teams also qualified for regionals.

Tyler McNabb won fourth in the boys singles.

In junior varsity division, Zuleika Martinez and Elsa Martinez won third in doubles.

“Congratulations to all the regional qualifiers and good luck,” said Coach Gilbert Castillo. “Thank you for another successful year.”

Others participating in the tournament were varsity players Mariela Hernandez and Madi Preston in doubles; Liz Hernandez and Eric Martines in mixed doubles.

Junior varsity players were Summer Foss and Danielle Varela in doubles.
