Mr. Piehl was born on Jan. 22, 1933, to Leander Monroe Piehl and Gertrude Cecilia Murphy in Woodsboro. He attended primary school at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church and graduated high school from the Corpus Christi College Academy. After graduation, he enrolled at the A&M College of Texas. He was a member of the Aggie Band and Corps of Cadets while there. After a car accident his sophomore year, he transferred to Texas A&I in Kingsville, where he received his degree.
He returned to Woodsboro after graduation to work in the family business, L.J. Piehl and Sons cotton gin in Woodsboro and later adding GMC truck and Buick automobile lines, as well as the Farmers Supply store.
Survivors include his four children, Jimmy (Cissy) Piehl of Corpus Christi, Jaime (Lonnie) Green of College Station, Patrick (Sherril) Piehl of Hudson Oaks and Cecelia (Kurt) Bauer of Refugio; and six grandchildren, Justin and Lauren Piehl, Kaitlin and Kathryn Moore, Connor Lowrie and Roan Bauer.
A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Moore Funeral Home Chapel.
The funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church. Burial followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wayne Schubert, Bryan Gumm, Randy Gumm, Ralph Cisneros, John Shipp, Tony Strauch Honorary pallbearers were Durwood Boenig and Scott Carter.
