The uproar caused by the cancellation of all regional track meets has brought the UIL around to a better solution.

In a statement issued late Thursday, the governing body of high school sports in Texas has rescheduled the regional meets instead of canceling them.

Region IV meets will now be held in mid-May. The 1A meet is set for May 18-19 at Sam Houston State University. Division 2A will be held on May 15-16 at Judson High School. Division 3A will hold its meet on May 19-20 at Flour Bluff. Division 4A athletes will compete at their regional meet on May 15-16 at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio. The 5A schools in the region will meet on May 15-16, also in San Antonio.

This pushes back the state track meet in Austin to June 5-6 at Myers Stadium at the University of Texas.

The rescheduling is a much more equitable solution for all the region qualifying athletes to compete on a even “playing field” as opposed to just taking the four top times or distances within a region as dictated by the April 29 UIL statement.

“At the time, we were simply trying to save the state track meet,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt in the April 30 statement.

“We also know that additional conflicts may occur because of these changes. However, we believe this schedule represents the best opportunity for the most students,” Breithaupt said.

This schedule change makes for a really long track season, but to all the competitors going to Regional Meets...just stay focused and reach for the State meet goal. The best of luck to everyone.
