Mr. Gips was born in Yorktown in 1921 to Paul Frederick Gips and Antonette Mollenhauer Gips.
He was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church.
After graduating from Yorktown High School, he played football at Texas Lutheran College before moving to Southwestern on a football scholarship. After his graduation he was inducted into the naval air corp.
He flew a PBY-5A Catalina on submarine patrol off the west coast. After WWII he returned to Yorktown High School as coach where he met and married Jewell Marie Sockwell in 1950.
He went on to earn his master’s degree from the University of Colorado.
He coached at Yorktown, Refugio, El Campo and Clear Creek. He retired as athletic director of the CCISD school district. His career spanned nearly 40 years.
In 1994, Paul married Lillian Durst Holmes.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian; son, James (Mary); daughter, Ann (Brad); grandchildren, Jason, Joshua and Jenna; and one great-grandson.
A visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 11, at Sparkman Hillcrest.
The burial, with Christian Committal, was held in Webster at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at the Forest Park East Cemetery.
The Celebration of Life was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, in the Cox Chapel of Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas.
