WOODSBORO – The Woodsboro City Council approved the canvass of the May 10 vote on Monday night, May 19.

Mayor Larry Jochetz welcomed incumbents Elix Ortiz and Jimmy Cisneros for another term. New member on the council, Richard Sanchez, was not present and away on business in Austin.

In the May 10 election. Ortiz garnered 70 votes to his opponent Freddie Arriaga’s 64 votes. Cisneros received 108 votes and was unopposed. Sanchez, also unopposed, received 113 votes.

Ortiz and Cisneros were given the oath of office by Mayor Jochetz. Sanchez will be sworn in at a later date.

The council presented a plaque to Jimmy Blaschke for his service on the council. Blaschke opted not to run again in the May 10 election.

Jochetz also said the council would discuss and take any action at its next regular meeting pertaining to hiring a police chief for Woodsboro.

At its last meeting, the council interviewed three candidates but took no action.

The police chief position came open when former Chief Joseph Roberts resigned abruptly on Jan. 30.
