REFUGIO – Four people died in a Memorial Day accident around 6:25 p.m. Monday.

Rain and wind may have contributed to a 2000 Chevrolet SUV in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 77 hydroplaning, crossing the asphalt median and crashing into a 2013 Ford Mustang in the northbound lanes, according to Chief Deputy Sheldon Wiginton.

The driver of the SUV stated another car cut in front of him, and he lost control, said DPS information officer Charlie Ramirez.

Two people in the Suburban and two people in the Mustang died in the wreck about a mile and a half north of Refugio near the railroad underpass.

A third vehicle, a 2013 Nissan Altima, tried to avoid hitting the Mustang after it was initially hit but struck it on the Mustang’s right back.

Other passengers in the vehicles were taken to Refugio Memorial Hospital and later released, Ramirez said.

Daniel Villalon, 69, and Maria Villalon, 68, both of La Feria, were passengers in the SUV and died at the scene. Ramirez said Daniel Villalon, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the SUV and struck by the Altima.

Dariel Carlos, 26, and Dioncio Trevino, 45, both of Pharr, were in the Mustang and died at the scene.

In addition to the Refugio County Sheriff’s Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Refugio Fire Department were on the scene, where traffic lanes were closed for more than two hours.
