Richard was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Tivoli, where he served both on the parish council and as head usher. He has run several businesses in Tivoli, Richard’s Texaco, Richard’s Sinclair service station, later called Richard’s Arco. Richard was a driver for the US Postal Service for 20 years. He was the first Hispanic to be elected as a Refugio county official. He served the Refugio County W.C.I.D. #1 as a director and vice-president; was a sponsor for explorer’s post, secretary-treasurer for the Woodman of the World, director for RC&D for 4 years. Richard owned Tivoli Wrecker Service, was the Refugio County Justice of the Peace for 21 years and Refugio County Commissioner for 8 years. Richard was noted for his marvelous job on car/pickup upkeep. He always had his vehicles spotless. It was the “RICHARD TOUCH” He did love to drive and keep them clean.
Survivors include his wife, Stella Martinez; daughters, Joyce (Craig) Lenhart of Austwell, Alice Velasquez of Tivoli, Sandy (Johnny) Castillo of Port Lavaca; step-sons, Rudy Vela of Rosenberg, Ralph Vela of San Antonio; step-daughters, Rachel (Larry) DeLeon of Victoria, Ruby (George) Garcia of Refugio, Rosanne (Carlos) Cantu of Georgetown, Regina (Jim) Mitchell of Victoria; brother, Paul Martinez of San Antonio; 10 grandchildren and 15 step-grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
Richard is preceded in death by daughter, Patsy Lopez; sister, Julia Bernal and one great-grandchild, Fiona Lenhart.
The family will received friends on Sunday, June 1, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at Grace Funeral Home.
A Rosary followed at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass was held on Monday, June 2, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Tivoli, with Father Gary Janak and Monsignor Rory Deane officiating.
Burial followed in Austwell Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers were John Velasquez, Alejandro Velasquez, Gerad Lenhart, Tyler Lenhart, Michael Barrientos and Richard Solis.
Honorary pallbearers are Juan Cervantes, Bill Cunningham, Marshall Holybee, Bob McGuill, Frank Cortez, Roger Fagan, Roger Galvan, Gonzalo Cervantes, Ernest Martinez and all Refugio County elected officials and employees.
