REFUGIO – The Refugio City Council voted to approve a resolution establishing a Chapter 380 Multi-Family Housing Economic Development Program on Tuesday, June 10.
The resolution is the first step in applying for the program through the state, which the council will have to submit an application.
Chapter 380 of the Texas Local Government Code allows the city to contract with private business to the favor of both.
The Council chose a seven-year contractual agreement. The agreement means a private business will agree to annexation in return for city services and a chance to have its property taxes waived over the contractual period.
However, if the private business defaults on the contract, the taxes, which would be kept in an account, are claimed by the city.
The city begins earning revenue from property taxes after the contractual period.
In other business, the council set a workshop on motel tax guidelines at its next meeting June 24.
Other future agenda items include possible clearing of the park trail and addressing safety issues and funding signage at the north entrance to Refugio.
