Lopez said Stripes Truck Stop Store manager Mario Hernandez reported to Refugio police what appeared to be the passing of counterfeit $100 bills by an unidentified male on June 29.
“The investigation led by Refugio Police Department Investigator Danny Madrigal unveiled a plot of fraud and trickery,” Lopez said.
The suspected male was Johnny Joe Sauceda, 33, of Robstown.
Sauceda was passing the counterfeit money to Stripes store clerk Nichole Viau, 27, who helped Sauceda pass 15 $100 counterfeit bills.
“The scheme would result in Viau issuing a money order to Sauceda, making fake money into good money,” Lopez said.
Lopez said the case was forwarded to U.S. Secret Service Agent Dan Morales to be presented to the U.S. federal prosecutor in Corpus Christi for the filing of criminal charges and prosecution of Sauceda and Viau.
