Davenport to speak at Longhorn & Ladyhorn athletic banquet

The George West Athletic Booster Club is hosting their annual Athletic Banquet on Monday, May 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the Live Oak County Coliseum. This years Guest Speaker and banquet Dedication is to Gary Davenport.

Gary Davenport grew up in Brady, TX and graduated from high school there. He attended Angelo State University and graduated from there in May of 1971. He married his wife, Diana in 1971. They were married for 17 years prior to starting their wonderful family. Gary and Diana have two beautiful and sweet girls, Jessica, born 07-02-88 and Kathryn, born 06-06-91. His family also includes Dot, his Springer Spaniel dog and 5 cats.

Gary began his 37 year long coaching career in August of 1971 and has since coached in divisions 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A. Over the years, he has been a varsity head coach in football, basketball, track and golf. Gary spent 18 years as a High School Assistant Coach and 19 years as Athletic Director. He is a three time recipient of the South Texas Coach of the Year Award.

Gary and his family have been in the South Texas area since 1981. Gary fulfilled his goal of becoming a Head Coach/ AD in 1989 when he was hired by Sam May, Superintendent of Sinton ISD. The two have remained close friends all these years.

While in Sinton, the Pirates went to the state semi-finals in 1990. Gary was named the Caller Times’ All South Texas Coach of the Year in 1990 and again in 1991.

While in Aransas Pass, for two consecutive years, the coaching staff led the Panthers to the Class 3A Division II state semifinals in the Astrodome. Gary was named the Caller Times’ 1998 All-South Texas Coach of the Year. Gary was named the 1999 Citizen of the Year by the Aransas Pass Chamber of Commerce. Gary was also elected by his peers to the Board of Regions of Texas High School Coaches Association: Served 1996-1999.

When Gary came to George West in 2006, to “help a friend out” fresh out of retirement, the community, parents, and athletes welcomed him with much appreciation and enthusiasm. He has helped create some great memories for all the athletes and in particular, the Longhorn Football Program, which had not been to the State Playoffs since 1999. In 2006, 2007, and 2008, the George West Longhorns Football Team made the State Playoffs. In 2006 they were Bi-District Champs, 2007 District Runner-Up, and 2008 were Undefeated District, Bi-District, Area, and Regional Champs. He and his coaching staff led this team all the way to the State Quarter Finals! In 2006 and 2007, Gary and his coaching staff were names All Bay Area Coaches Of The Year For 2A.
