Former Refugio resident Vince Cantu will be the guest speaker at the Woodsboro Veterans’ annual Memorial Day service on Sunday, May 24, at the Square starting at 1 p.m.

The Vietnam War vet is one of the soldiers mentioned in Joseph Galloway’s book, “We Were Soldiers Once, and Young.”

U.S. flags will be blessed by Deacon Rey Rodriguez after which the Veterans will go to La Rosa and St. Bernard cemeteries to place Old Glory on all the Veterans’ graves. Family members are invited to participate at the cemeteries.

The group will then march from the Frosty on Wood Avenue to The Town Square. Ceremonies will begin at about 2 p.m.

A meal will be served after the ceremony. All veterans and the public are invited and encouraged to attend.

I've know Vince for over 39 years. I consider him a true friend and a gentleman. Many years ago, Vince personally told me the story of the battle he was in at the Ia Drang Valley in Viet Nam. He, along with so many others, were young and brave. I salute all those men and women who served during the Viet Nam War. Soldiers who proudly fought for God and country!

I am proud to say I know Vince Cantu. Well deserving of any and all honors!!! GOD bless him and may GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
