Megan Bienhoff was one of 54 new teachers introduced to Gregory-Portland ISD during Tuesday’s breakfast event at the high school.

Bienhoff comes to the Coastal Bend from San Antonio, where she taught at John Glenn Elementary School in the Northside ISD.

“I like that this is smaller,” Bienhoff said. “The district I came from had 71 elementary schools.”

Bienhoff has lived in the Coastal Bend before; she graduated from Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi. She decided to move back to the area to be with her boyfriend, Josh, who is an HVAC technician at Port Royal.

Bienhoff will teach 4th grade math, science and social studies at Stephen F. Austin Elementary School in Gregory. She keeps a sign in her classroom that reads, ‘No Slacking,’ she said.

“I want kids to show up, have fun and enjoy what they’re doing,” Bienhoff said.

The upcoming school year will mark Bienhoff’s fourth as a teacher. She said she has noticed a more public approach to education at Gregory-Portland than there was in San Antonio.

“It’s more of a community thing,” Bienhoff said. “Education involves everyone, not just the teachers in the schools.”
