Superintendent Emilio Vargas III said 26 new hires were made over the summer to fill teaching, administrative and staff vacancies and cited Goliad’s lack of affordable housing as a reason for the big turnover rate.
“That is quite a few for us,” Vargas said. “There has been a real struggle finding teachers. They are having a difficult time trying to find a place to live here in Goliad, which is a shame because they would add to our local economy. If they live out of town, they’ll shop and buy groceries out of town and pay their utilities out of town and other things that are a benefit to our tax base.
“We lost several teachers, especially at the elementary level. They were driving in from out of town. We lost probably seven outstanding teachers – three of them to Victoria, one got a job in Edna and one to Beeville. They don’t have to be on Highway 59 anymore travelling back and forth.”
Vargas said the housing shortage in Goliad has hampered the school district’s ability to attract young teachers.
“There just is not much for them here,” Vargas said. “If you come in established with a family and looking for a nice, quiet place, this is a good place to be other than you can’t find a house.”
Among the new administrative employees is high school assistant principal Green Hill, who was hired from Corpus Christi King High School. Hill resides in Aransas Pass and will drive back and forth.
Goliad ISD also will have changes at the pre-high school level as there will no longer be a Goliad Intermediate School. Pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade students will attend Goliad Elementary School and seventh- and eighth-graders will attend Goliad Middle School.
“Our plan is for next year to move sixth grade off of that campus and move them back to the middle school,” Vargas said. “That would create a sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade middle school campus. We feel it is a better use of our facilities and better use of our staff.”
Former GIS Principal Debra Bauer will be the GES principal. Former GES Principal Patricia Huber will be an associate principal at the campus.
