The folks at City Hall brace for the last of an ice cold bath just after noon Thursday, Aug. 21, in front of the C.M. “Smitty” Smith Central Fire Station for an ALS fundraiser. Equipment operator Mitchell “Mitch” Smith Jr. had the honor of dumping a front-end loader bucket full of water and ice on Mayor David Carabajal, Mayor Pro Tem Libby Spires, Councilmen John Fulghum and Trace Morrill and Councilwoman Yvonne Dunn. Other volunteers included City Secretary Barbara Treviño and one of her employees, Gabriela Hernandez, Police Chief Joe Treviño and Assistant Police Chief Richard Cantu, Police Civil Service Commissioner Tomas P. Saenz, radio station personality Bebe Adamez and H-E-B Food Store employees Luis “Tiny” Longoria and Sheila Poorman. The effort had raised almost $300 by the time Smith dumped the water on them, and Hernandez said the city was still taking donations. Carabajal challenged City of Corpus Christi officials and Bee County commissioners also to take the plunge.
