Iola ends Lady Eagles season

The Lady Eagles traveled to Weimar to take on the Iola Lady Bulldogs in the regional semifinals series on May 22 and 23.

The Woodsboro ladies dropped two straight, hard fought contests to tend their season.

In the first game of the two out of three series, the Lady Eagles came up short 5-2.

Lady Bulldogs capitalized on a single, a double and some untimely errors to score two runs in the first inning.

The WHS girls tied things up in the fourth with Mallory Jessop striking the big blow , a two-run double that plated Chelsea Bluemel and Megan Carter.

The Lady Bulldogs pulled ahead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs, again capitalizing on errors and a double.

The Lady Bulldogs would add another run in the fifth to make the score 5-2. Carter pitched the complete game with six strikeouts and giving up just four hits. McCool went 2-4, Bluemel 1-3 with a run scored, Carter 1-3 and scoring a run. Jessop was 2-4, with two RBI’s.

In the second game of the series, the Lady Eagles jumped on Iola, pitching early and often. But, the Lady Bulldogs answered every WHS scoring threat and led 8-5 going into the bottom of the seventh.The Lady Eagles brought in freshman pitcher Malorie Nesloney when Carter succumbed to the mid-afternoon heat. Nesloney would walk the first batter she faced and then shut down the Lady Bulldogs.

With the score 8-5 the Lady Eagles would mount one more comeback in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning.

With one out, freshman Kasie Fierova started the rally with a single to left field. Cisneros followed with a single of her own. Lopez would load them up on an error by the Lady Bulldogs shortstop. Jessop would come up with another RBI single that would score Fierova. Niemann would also follow suit with an RBI single of her own, scoring Cisneros. With bases still juiced and two outs, McCool would get her third RBI hit of the game to score Lopez from third, tying the game up at eight apiece.

The Lady Eagles could not score any runs on the bottom of the eighth inning to top Iola’s eighth inning barrage of hits and five runs scored, ending the game and the Lady Eagles season 13-8.

Nesloney recorded five K’s. McCool went 3-5 with two RBI’s. Carter was 1-2 with one run scored. Fierova went 1-3, with one run. Cisneros was 2-5 with two runs scored. Lopez crossed the plate twice for the Lady Eagles. Jessop was 2-4, with one RBI. Niemann went 3-4, with an RBI and scored once in the loss. Jochetz had one hit in five trips to the plate.

The WHS coaching staff and players wanted to express their thanks to all the parents and supporters that have been with the team all year.
