Smith to speak at Juneteenth

Former Refugio resident Gloria A. Smith will be the speaker at the fifth annual Juneteenth Celebration on June 20.

“Gloria Smith is an acclaimed motivator, facilitator, communicator and moderator,” said Wanda Dukes, one of the organizers.

A former educator, she is a leadership trainer and serves on non-profit boards and organizations.

The Refugio County Community Cemetery is sponsoring the two-day celebration on June 19 -20 as a fund raiser for the Barefield Learning Center.

On Friday, June 19, a teen dance will be conducted from 8-11 p.m. Cliff Smith will provide the music.

Live entertainment will also be provided by the Mania Boys rap group Refreshments will be available free of charge.

On Saturday, June 20, ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. with entertainment including gospel singing by the Refugio County Community Choir, Deirda and Herman Boone, the Angelic Gospel Mass Choir. There will also be praise dancing and a drill team performance by Mount Nebo Baptist Church youth.
