Roberts, the Three Rivers Police Chief was nominated by his fiancée, Patsy Morris, because he “has faced many challenges and persevered with a confident spirit despite those challenges. He has excelled above and beyond his duty in order to protect the citizens of Three Rivers.”
During the past year, the police department has been short-handed by up to three officers. Roberts faced public concern over decreased officer patrol, said Morris. “Being the Chief, he could have worked an easier schedule, but that is not Vance. Instead, he chose to work many hours of overtime including weekends and holidays in order to allow his officers to have time off. He has also delayed and rescheduled personal vacations to finish pending investigations.”
Morris went on to say, “As a [police] officer, Vance plays many roles – a medic first responding, a counselor helping stop domestic disturbances, an investigator unraveling the truth, a teacher putting on programs for children, a medic spotting people who need mental help, a neighborhood friend checking on someone not following their usual routine, a trainer of younger, brasher officers, a public complaint office during business hours and many times after business hours, a diplomat and liaison with area businesses and residents. Despite his intense work schedule, his professional and personal challenges, one of Vance’s greatest accomplishments is displaying a loving commitment to his family! Vance is a man of whom much is asked and who gives much, not just from duty, but most importantly from his heart.”
The Outstanding Lion of the Year award went to Judy Weber and the J. F. Gray Scholarship recipients were Rachel Dockery and Bo East. Teachers from Three Rivers High School vote on the recipients based on their leadership qualities at school and in the community.
Additionally, Lions Club officers for 2009-10 were elected. They include: president, Donny Kasper; vice president, Harry West; secretary, Doris Wieding; treasurer, Judy Weber; tail twister, Lloyd Grubbs; membership chair, Rita Anzauldua; and Lion tamer, Peggy Kasper.
