Running back Benji Gomez scored the first Beeville touchdown with a first quarter 56-yard burst. Tight end Conner Shears had a short reception from Brooks Holder for the two-point conversion to give the Trojans an early 8-0 lead over the Texans.
The second quarter was all Beeville with Trey Thomas scoring on a 20-yard reverse and Gomez going in from five yards out. The two-point conversion from Frank Gutierrez on the Thomas touchdown put the Trojans out front 16-0 and the conversion on the Gomez score went to Jeremy Byrd who made good on the two-pointer by hauling in another Holder pass for a 24-0 lead at the half.
The Texans scored on their first possession of the third quarter to pull within 16 at 24-8. The Trojans got that one back on a five-yard run by Gutierrez but the PAT try failed to give the Trojans a 30-8 advantage going into the final period. The Texans did get one more score but it was too little, too late for the Texans with the Trojans earning the 30-16 victory.
Coach Justin Soza acknowledged the play of the team’s offensive line. “They did an outstanding job, opening all kinds of running lanes for our backs,” he said.
The Trojan freshman coach also noted running backs Ryan Rangel and Josh Cuevas as doing a good job running the ball for the Orange.
“It was also an outstanding job from our defensive unit. It wasn’t bad for a district opener,” said Soza.
