The Moreno Middle School eighth-grade football teams captured one victory and a tie against the visiting Flour Bluff Hornets on Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“We’re real proud of the job the guys are doing on both teams. They all take the field with a lot of heart and play hard,” said Trojan coach Randy Maupin.

The White team kept fighting back and earned a 20-20 tie with the Hornets while the Orange Trojan team remained unbeaten by posting a 32-14 win.

The first game of the evening had the Hornets score first on a reverse that covered 43 yards. Flour Bluff took the 6-0 lead and held it until late in the first quarter. Demetrius Herrera evened things up with a 51-yard scamper for Beeville at the 2:53 mark of the first quarter to make it a 6-6 ball game. The PAT run was stopped by the Hornets to maintain the tie.

The Trojan defense, led by Raymond Martinez, Brent Puga, Robert Ramirez, Diego Daiz, Ruben Garza, Tevin Wilson and Joseph Gonzales, kept the Hornets out of the end zone the rest of the first half.

The Hornets came out in the second half and scored on their first offensive play on a 35-yard run to get back the lead at 12-6. The Trojans turned the ball over on an interception at the Flour Bluff goal line on their first possession of the second half. The Trojan “D” came through again as they created a fumble on a punt to put the hosts back in business at midfield.

Herrera picked up good yardage on a couple of runs and then went the final five yards for a Beeville score with 19 second left in the third period. The Trojans failed to convert on the extra points try and it was a 12-12 standoff.

The first score of the fourth quarter had the Hornets regaining the lead on a short run. The two-point conversion was good and the visitors were holding a 20-12 advantage with just 3:27 left in the game.

The Trojans marched down field from their own 40-yard line with Marcos Ganceres, Kurt Trevino and Herrera getting chunks of yardage. Herrera scored from 43 yards out to put the Trojans within two at 20-18 with 1:37 left on the clock. The two-point conversion worked like a charm as QB Martinez found Thomas Moore wide open in the end zone for the 20-20 tie.

The Trojans were successful on an onside kick but could get no closer than the FB 18-yard line before giving it up on downs. Time expired a couple of plays later and the teams were still deadlocked at 20-20.

The Orange game was all Beeville as the young Trojans outscored the Hornets 28-12 over the first two quarters. QB Brady Jones put the Trojans on the scoreboard with a one-yard sneak with 5:47 left in the first period. The Hornets returned the ensuing kickoff all the way for a 75-yard TD and tied the game at 6-6.

Running back Eric Rosales blasted off a 4-yard scamper into the end zone to put the Trojans back into the lead for good at 12-6. The conversion pass from Jones to Tyler Byrd was good to make the score 14-6.

The Trojan defense stopped a Hornet drive as defensive back Joe Rey Garza intercepted a FB pass at the goal line and returned it back to the Beeville 8. The Trojans took advantage of the turnover and marched 92 yards with Trevino, Aric Gamez and Rosales again piling up the yards on the ground. Jones finished off the drive by hitting Byrd on a 15-yard aerial for the touchdown. That made the contest a 20-6 Beeville lead.

The Hornets made it 20-14 with just 38 seconds remaining in the first half but that was still plenty of time for the Trojans to tack on another TD. Starting at the team’s own 45, Beeville’s Rosales made it to the FB 27-yard line and then with 8 seconds left the Jones to Byrd connection made good for their second TD strike of the night. The PAT pass fell incomplete but the Trojans were up by two scores at 26-14 going into the halftime.

The Jones to Byrd combo struck again in the third quarter for the Trojans’ final score of the night. The extra point attempt failed but the Trojans led 32-14 going into the fourth quarter.

Flour Bluff threatened late in the fourth but another interception stopped them cold. Steven Garcia picked off a Hornet aerial in the end zone for a touchback with a little over two minutes left to play. The Trojans ran out the time and captured a 32-14 victory.

Rosales finished the night with 172 yards on just eight carries. Byrd scored three touchdowns on the receiving end of Jones’ aerials.

The eighth-grade teams will play in Beeville next Tuesday night against the visiting Calallen Wildcats. The first game of the evening will kickoff at 5:30.

Great job guys. The White Team had a great defense stand at the end of the first half to keep FB from scoring on the two point conversion and keep the score close.
