Golwas, professor of history at Delmar College in Corpus Christi, is a decorated former Naval aviator with service in Vietnam. Golwas has been at Delmar since 2001. His research interests have included the history of the Texas Navy from 1830 to 1845.

The shipping lanes between New Orleans and Texas nurtured the early Texas Revolution with volunteers from the U.S, arms, ammunition, artillery and other manufactured goods.

Naval action started in 1835 in the bay at Anahuac. After 1836, the Republic of Texas Navy was challenged in the Gulf by pirates and the Mexican Navy. Statehood in 1845 finally retired the Texas Navy.
