There is an old adage used by coaches that goes something like this, “Any old nag can start a race, but it takes a real thoroughbred to finish one.” This certainly describes the 2009 Longhorn football team thus far. Following a tough week off the field and overcoming the loss of several players due illness Friday night, the Horns rode a strong second half performance on both sides of the football and special teams to defeat the Goliad Tigers 26 to 19. The great support from the Longhorn Band and boisterous fans certainly was a boost to the Big Blue Wrecking Crew.

The Longhorns kicked off to Goliad to begin the game and the Tigers marched down the field behind the running and passing of quarterback Althof and the running of back Sippel. Goliad scored the first touchdown on a fifteen yard pass from Otwell to Althof. The point after kick was successful and Goliad led 7 to 0. With 2:23 minutes remaining in the first quarter, Cayleb Holt took a Tiger punt and returned it for 62 yards and a touchdown with the aid of some great blocks. The extra point kick by Jimmerson was unsuccessful leaving the score 7 to 6 at the end of the first quarter.

Goliad scored the only second quarter touchdown on a 17 yard run by Althof. The point after kick was no good. As they did the previous week, the Longhorns took the opening possession of the second half and scored on a 36 yard Albert Gamez run. Jimmerson’s kick was true and the game was tied at 13 to 13. The Longhorns scored again in the third quarter with a brilliant 74 yard scamper by Holt. The holder was unable to handle the snap from center which resulted in an unsuccessful point after touchdown try and the Horns led 19 to 13. Goliad scored again with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter on a Billy Sippel 14-yard run. The point after kick again was unsuccessful leaving the score tied at 19 to 19. This touchdown was accomplished with a questionable call from the officiating crew and with two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties the Longhorns started the next possession from inside the 15 yard line.

After making a couple of first downs the Longhorns faced fourth and long and Coach Tim Holt made a excellent decision to punt and his defense responded by stopping the Tigers on three downs and forcing a short punt which resulted in the Longhorns taking over inside the Tiger 25-yard line. They drove in for the winning score which was a five yard Holt run. Jimmerson’s kick was successful again for a 26 to 19 lead with 37 seconds left in the ballgame. The Tigers did complete one pass before the clock ran out on them.

The Defense for the second straight week yielded yardage and points to a spread offense, but also made some outstanding plays. The defensive secondary was led by Lucas Yokum with eight solo tackles and one assist along with Zane Schorp’s five solo tackles and Joseph Lopez’s interception. Linebackers Michael Fuentes, Brett Epperson, Clayton Whitley, and Dylan White showed improving play. The front line led by Shannon Taylor and Aaron McCabe made some big tackles for loss against the Tiger backfield. Offensively, sophomore Seth Pipkin started his first varsity game at quarterback and had trouble with the center - quarterback exchange several times. Goliad was able to contain the inside running of fullback Taylor, but had no answer for backs Holt and Gamez who combined for 260 yards on 27 rushes. Holt’s 62 yard punt return also played a big part in the victory. Punter Zane Schorp averaged almost 40 yards on three punts and penned Goliad deep in its own territory twice.

The Longhorns will host the Bishop Badgers in their third game of the season on Friday and hopefully will have the players back who were out last week.

Newcomers Michael Fuentes, Michael Marlar, Dylan White, Matt Hancock, Abel Perez, Chris Ruiz, Thaddeus Pierce, Ethan Anderson, and Joseph Moore continue to improve and gain experience and certainly will help the Longhorn cause down the road. Come out and support the Big Blue Wrecking Crew this week.
