The Rio Medio Chapter of Daughters of the Republic of Texas met on Sept. 15 and learned about the Coastal Fish Hatcheries from Ruben Chavez of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Mr. Chavez explained that the objectives of the program are fish production, research efforts and public outreach in the recreational fishing multi-billion dollar industry of Texas. In 1996, a new hatchery, the Perry R. Bass Hatchery, was completed that adds a large number of high-quality fish in a cost effective manner.
In addition to kid fish programs that spread the conservation message, the thousands of visitors that tour the hatcheries every year receive the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s message of coastal conservation. According to Mr. Chavez, coastal fishing in Texas is better than any time in the last thirty years.
In the business session, President Ann Chambless called the meeting to order and led the pledges to the United States and Texas flags. Chaplain Diana Braly gave the invocation and Treasurer Myrtle Bocquet reported that dues for the new club year are being received Cheryl McGuire was welcomed as a guest.
Mrs. Braly presented a President’s pin to out-going President Sandra Jones, expressing the group’s appreciation for the excellent leadership provided during the four year term of her presidency. Then Mrs. Braly distributed forms that members are requested to fill out and return to her.
President Chambless announced that the District VII workshop will be held in San Antonio on Nov. 7 and that our chapter has been invited to attend other area workshops. New yearbook information was distributed and members were reminded of the next meeting on Nov. 17.
Hostess for the meeting was Mrs. Chambless. Thirteen members were in attendance and upon adjournment, members enjoyed lunch at The Cistern.
