Friday night in Corpus Christi was not a fun evening for the Lady Trojan volleyball teams. The Ray Lady Texans won all three matches over the visiting Beeville girls for a big district sweep.

The varsity ladies fell in three straight by the scores of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-18.

“Ray came out strong and had us down 19 - 1 in the first set and we never recovered from that. The girls did play a strong third set. We’ll work hard to get back on the winning track this week,” said Lady Trojan head coach Larry Lollar.

Sets one and two were all Ray. A strong service game and a defense that picked up everything were the keys. Ray hit well and the Lady Trojans could not seem to get rolling.

Set three had the Lady Trojans staying competitive and right with the Lady Texans most of the way. A late surge by the home team put the set away for a 25-18 victory, capturing the match at 3-0.

Brennan Holder had four kills in the match while Carissa Elizalde finished with three kills. Randi Maupin got two kills at the net for the Lady Trojans.

Krista Gonzlaes set up 10 points for assists. Maupin blocked four Ray shots at the net. Natalie Elder led the team in digs with 12 with Gonzales collecting six and Elizalde four.

The Beeville varsity is 1-3 in district play and went on the road again on Tuesday night at Port Lavaca against the Sandies.

The junior varsity girls lost a tough opening set to the Ray Lady Texans by the score of 25-22.

“The Lady Trojan attack had several opportunities to win the match but we were unable to put down a couple of critical hits. After the disappointment of the first game loss, the Lady Trojan offensive attack became somewhat dysfunctional and simply could not buy a ‘kill’ in the second game, losing 25-13,” said JV coach Chuck Youngblood.

The JV team stands 2-2 in district action after the loss.

“The team is becoming a very consistent serving and defensive squad, but we have some work to do with the offensive attack process. As the coach, I must assume the responsibility for the inconsistent offensive play,” said Youngblood.

“We will continue to focus on individual service and first pass efficiency, but I must incorporate more practice opportunities in order to develop a prolific ‘kill’ attack.”

“During the first four district matches, Ellen Lopez, Bethany San Miguel and Paris Thomas have been very consistent offensive threats from the service line. Additionally, Victoria Elizalde has provided numerous offensive opportunities with great individual hustle and set placement,” Youngblood said.

The freshman girls played even more competitively with the home team girls. It went just two sets, both wins by the young Lady Texans. The first set went into extra points before Ray pulled it out at 26-24 for the 1-0 lead in the best of three sets.

The second set was another close one and the Ray girls came out on top at 25-21 to earn the victory at 2-0.

The loss was the first in district play for the Beeville freshman girls who now stand at 3-1 in District 30-4A play.
