The Trojan varsity shut down the Ray Texan running game, but could not shut down the passing arm of Texan quarterback Rey Rodriguez.

Rodriguez threw for almost 300 yards and led the home-standing Texans to a 35-33 win over the Beeville Trojans on Friday night at Buc Stadium in Corpus Christi.

“I am very proud of the way our boys played Friday night; they played their hearts out until the very end and they never gave up. After being down 13 points in the first half, we kept our composure and got ourselves back in the game,” said Trojan head coach Troy Moses.

Ray jumped to a 27-14 halftime lead on the strength of Rodriguez’s arm. Two touchdowns came via the airways and the other two were short runs by Rodriguez after the aerial attack got the Texans inside the Trojan 5.

Beeville’s Frank Gutierrez broke a 44-yard run for a score in the first period to tie the game at 7-7 and went eight yards in the second quarter to again tie the game at 14-14. Gutierrez finished the night with 157 yards rushing to lead the Trojans rushing game.

Ray scored twice in the final 2:21 of the second quarter to move in front 27-14 at the half as the hosts capitalized on Beeville’s only pass attempt of the first half, an interception that set the Texans up on offense at the Beeville 39-yard line. The final score of the first half came on an 18-yard pass from Rodriguez to Reed Clemens. The extra-point conversion failed on a swinging-gate play for a 27-14 Texan game at the half.

Beeville answered on their first two possessions of the second half. The Trojans marched 77 yards in 10 plays with Jordan Nelson scoring on a pitch that covered the final 25 yards. The PAT kick failed and it was a 27-20 contest with 6:38 left in the third period.

The Trojan defense forced Ray into a three and out as Adrian Martinez put the Texans in a hole with a tackle for a loss on first down. The Texans never recovered in the series.

The punt covered 39 yards and set the Trojan offense back in business at their own 40-yard line. Five plays was all it took as Gutierrez got his third TD of the game on a 33-yard ramble to make it 27-26. The tying extra point attempt failed and the Trojans were down by just one point with 2:29 left in the third quarter.

The Texans struggled on their next possession, but made good on two long receptions to get another TD before entering the fourth quarter. The score went to 33-26 and the Texans went for two on the conversion. Rodriguez connected with Clemens for the two points and the Texans raised the score to 35-26.

Beeville ran off 12 plays on their only possession of the fourth quarter and the drive covered 55 yards for the Trojans’ last score. Aaron Shirley picked up a lot of yardage on the drive which was capped with a 13-yard scoring strike from QB Brooks Holder to Lazaro Smith. Lonnie Jordan kicked the PAT and that brought the Trojans within two at 35-33 with 7:02 left in the game.

Ray kept the ball the rest of the fourth quarter with the help of a couple of Beeville penalties. They moved from their own 30 and ended things by taking a knee at the Trojan one-yard line with time expiring. The final was a 35-33 Ray victory.

“I think that we played well enough to win the game; we just continue to make mistakes at crucial times in the game. We are going to work hard this week to prevent those mistakes from happening again,” Moses said.

The Trojans ran for 276 yards on the night with Gutierrez gaining 157 yards and three touchdowns. Nelson ended the night with 77 yards on 13 carries. Shirley rushed for 31 yards on eight attempts and Brandon Harris went 11 yards on four tries. Holder completed two of three passes for 36 yards.

The Beeville defense limited the Texans to just five yards rushing on 15 carries. The Ray passing game went for 283 yards on 21-33 attempts by Rodriguez.
