“Without this check we couldn’t have this tournament and without the tournament we can’t give to the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville,” said Don Kasper, president of TR Lions. The Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville helps children with physical disabilities, type 1 diabetes and cancer develop a “Can Do” philosophy. Children with special needs from all over the state of Texas are invited to attend. Tail Twister Lloyd Grubbs held up a brass lion bank and said with a twinkle, “The 25-cent fines I collect from members that forgot to wear their Lions pins goes to the children too.”
After thanking Farrell, Kasper recognized the guests and Lions Treasurer Judy Weber gave the treasurer’s report and read the minutes in the absence of Secretary Doris Wieding. Weber said 14 people had preregistered for the catfish tournament. Kasper said, “Yes, but we expect 80 people in all; many wait until the last minute to register.”
“The door prizes have generated interest,” said Weber. “This year we got a Nolan Ryan signed baseball from the Waterfront. We got gift certificates from the Bass Pro Shop and the Wal-Mart in Beeville and Kenedy. We also got prizes from Lyssy Eckel, Bar-H Outfitters, Best Western and others,” Kasper said.
Weber gave a report on the Lions’ raffle. She said they have been selling raffle tickets at the home football games and she said she plans on asking Zamzow’s Deli to help sell raffle tickets too. “We already paid for the raffle items of an iPod and a Wii and so far we have made a $230 profit but we have to sell a lot more tickets. The money we make goes to our general fund for ongoing donations to the Boys & Girls club, scholarships and eyeglasses for disadvantaged children.”
Prior to adjournment, Kasper said Lions club member Pete Alexia will give a “wind generation” presentation at the next meeting on Nov. 12.
