Jack Thomas Sportsman, 78, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2009. For 56 years, Jack was the “Voice of the Refugio Bobcats” football team.

He was the current president of the Refugio Lions club and the president of the RHS Ex-Students Association, a member of the 1946 and 1947 Refugio Bobcat Regional Championship team, the highest state rank at that time, and was named to the Dallas-Morning News Little All-American Offensive and Defensive team.

He was a Refugio County Citizen of the year and was master of ceremonies at civic functions and auctions in Refugio County. He also served in the U.S. Army.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a half-sister, Georgia Sportsman; a brother, Jerry Sportsman; and a niece, Roxanne Sportsman.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Louise Sportsman of Refugio; two daughters and their spouses, Tana and Rick Loveday of Odem, and Tricia and Kyle Duke of Alvarado; one son and his wife, Steve and Susan Sportsman of Corpus Christi; and six grandchildren.

Services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Refugio High School auditorium, with the Rev. John Alsbrook officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were Carl Barnhart, Allen Reilly, Johnny Murphy, Chuck Holloway, Reggie West and Gerald Morgan.
