The Refugio Bobcats clinched at least a tie for another district title last Friday night in Bobcat Stadium by defeating the Skidmore –Tynan Bobcats, 49-7.

Refugio will again advance to the state playoffs for the 31st time in the last 32 years.

The win was tainted by the absence of Refugio game announcer Jack Sportsman, who passed away during the game.

Skidmore took the opening kickoff as Refugio deferred to the second half. S-T moved the ball up to their 40 and punted the ball away.

Refugio took over at the S-T 44 and moved in eight plays to score on a 14-yard pass to Cory Brown. Jhoston Padron kicked the extra point and Refugio led 7-0 midway through the first quarter.

Skidmore’s next possession started at their 25 after the kickoff. Refugio’s defense pushed S-T back to its 14 where again it punted. This time the punt was blocked and Marquise Brown picked up the ball and ran in from the 11-yard line. The PAT failed but Refugio was on its way to another rout of an opponent, leading 13-0 going into the second stanza.

Refugio would score three more times before the half. Draigon Silvas scored on a 12-yard run and made the two point conversion with a run.

Terrence Smith scored on a 4-yard run and Padron kicked the extra point. Silvas scored the third TD on a beautiful play. Quarterback Kyle Hendley hit Silvas on a screen pass and after that it was all Silvas as he darted throughout the S-T defense, kicking off tacklers and made the score on a 36-yard run. Padron kicked the PAT and the Cats went to the field house at halftime with a commanding 35-0 lead.

Things slowed down in the second half as Coach Jason Herring again threw his reserves into the game for valuable experience. Refugio would score two more times in the third quarter to end the local’s scoring.

Hendley hit Brian Ramierz with a 6-yard touchdown pass and Aaron Perez hit Jourdan Ortiz with a pass good for 55 yards and a TD. Padron added both extra points with his successful kicks.

Skidmore would score a touchdown as time ran out on the clock when Joe Casarez scored from the 1-yard line. Cody Chambers kick the PAT to make the final score 49-7.

Refugio had 15 first downs to Skidmore’s 8. Refugio tallied 352 yards of offense with all but 9 of those yards coming in the first three quarters.

Skidmore amassed only 102 yards of offense, all on the ground. Hendley had a good night passing, hitting on 11 passes for 149 yards.

Ortiz was again the big receiver with 111 yards on 4 of 5 catches. Perez hit on all three of his passes for 60 yards. Smith was the team’s leading rusher with 72 yards on 8 carries.

Refugio will play another Bobcat team when they go to Bloomington next Friday night.

Sadly, Bloomington is 1-8 and has been the “whipping boy” for the district. Refugio will be a big favorite to post its third straight undefeated regular season in a row.

Last year Refugio took down Bloomington 70-0. Refugio has a 23-0 record going into the game with Bloomington.
