As one enters into the month of November, it is only natural that thoughts are drawn towards the celebration of Thanksgiving and its true meaning. This includes thanking God for all His benefits.
It is easy for one to ask God to bless them, their family, their job, or their surroundings. The words of the chorus, “God Bless America,” comes easily to the lips of the Christian church, but rarely does one hear “America bless God.” It is time for America to bless God.
As one reads the text, it is evident that all should bless God with the same sincerity as one should follow the first commandment in Chapter 20 of Exodus. Just as one should love God with their everything, one should bless God with their all.
While there are many that give God the glory for America’s prosperity, there are those that feel God has done nothing and has no place in our lives. In the eighth chapter of Deuteronomy, one can find that God gives the power to be prosperous: “...for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.” (v18)
One finds it easy to overlook the necessity to be thankful for their material blessings, health, mercy and salvation. When one is on the top of the world, it is easy to become apathetic in one’s relationship with God. It is during one’s low moments that God has a deeper meaning.
America has been facing some of her lower moments. She is in the midst of armed conflicts, economic hardships, disease outbreaks and uncertain future. It is time for citizens, especially believers, to begin to give God his just due.
How does one bless God? One may bless God with the fruit of one’s lips. Another aspect of blessing God may consist of visiting him, in other words, go to church. Another aspect may consist of doing His will, following His commandments. The main point of blessing God is that one realizes that he is God and is worthy to be praised.
As the night seems ominous, one can take solace with the knowledge that the sun is going to rise. While one may feel that one, is in a valley, a mountaintop is on the horizon.
With God, there are better things waiting. It is time for all to bless God and forget not all his benefits.
