The game, played against Three Rivers this past Thursday, was an exciting one between the long time rivals. The final score was twenty eight to twenty one, with the yearlings taking the win. Brittany Mathis scored fourteen points, Bethany Brysch ten points, Caroline Bellows two, and Robbie Cruz two. Cassie Cantu, Anissa Alvarez, Heather Knight, and Dustie Davis did an exceptional job on defense as well, contributing to the teams win.
The Lady Yearlings went on to compete at the Three Rivers Tournament on Saturday, facing Jourdanton first. This game went undecided until the very end, when the Lady Yearlings pulled away for a thirty three to twenty six win. Brittany Mathis scored a total of thirteen points, Bethany Brysch with two, Sarah Crawford with two, Esme Toscano with two, Kaelyn Miles with two, and Caroline Bellows with four. It was truly a game won on defense though, with all of the girls doing a phenomenal job on the defensive end. Blake Mosley and Mandy Whittaker did exceptionally well in this area, and were forces to be reckoned with in the game against Jourdanton.
The final match up was against Three Rivers, and George West walked away with a twenty five to sixteen win, taking home the first place title. Brittany Mathis scored thirteen points, Bethany Brysch with ten, and Caroline Bellows with two. Maizie Villareal, Catarina Ruiz, Elida Cuevas, and Lizet Palacious played an excellent game of defense, leading to the teams victory. Brittany Clifton also emerged as one of the team’s key defensive players throughout the weekend.
The Lady Yearlings seventh grade team is undefeated in district play, with only two games remaining. They have done an incredible job, and will continue to work hard until the season’s end, making their coaches, parents, and fans proud of all they have accomplished.
