Despite the cold and rainy weather, the Bee County Expo Center is a flurry of activity.

Many youths’ livestock and homemaking entries, as well as some adults’, have been checked in and judged, yet others are preparing to appear before the judges in the 2010 Bee County Junior Show’s final days.

Whether your son’s or daughter’s animals, food, crafts or clothing have been or will be awarded a ribbon as winners, all of these young participants, members of Bee County 4-H, FFA and FCS groups, deserve to be recognized.

They have put in long hours and learned a great deal about their projects, often working with mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, or other relatives.

Many have a story to tell about their project so if you see one standing still long enough, ask them some questions. All are eager to talk about the hard work they put in during the past months and years to get everything ready for the competition.

In our eyes, all these youngsters are winners, as are the association board of directors, judges and other adults who helped organize, support and produce the junior show.

It’s still not too late to visit the Expo Center to see these youths’ projects. This week youngsters are bringing in their animals — goats, steers and chickens, to name only a few — for critique by the judges.

It isn’t easy raising a prize-winning animal, so take a moment to congratulate them. Everyone enjoys hearing an “attaboy” or “attagirl.”

Several county schools are not in session on Friday, so participants can get ready for the final event judging and special sale on Saturday.

As always, individuals, buyers groups and company representatives are encouraged to attend Saturday’s special sale, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Expo Center, and to be generous with these dedicated youths, especially in this down economy.

Good luck to all the participants. As a community, we salute your efforts and are proud of you.
