The young Lady Trojans played host to the Flour Bluff Lady Hornets and split the four games played. Both seventh-grade teams captured victories while the eighth-grade squads lost to the visitors.
The 7B team won a close 17-15 contest over the Hornets to run their record to 2-5 in district.
“The girls played good defense and improved on their passing game,” said MMS coach Sara James.
Both Miranda Tucker and Marissa Medellin finished with a team-high six points in the win. April Gutierrez added two points while Rebecca De Los Santos, Stephanie Moya and Taylor Sain each contributed one marker.
The 7A team pushed their season record to 9-4 on the year and a winning 4-3 mark in district play with 27-25 victory over Flour Bluff.
“I was very proud of the way we ended on a winning note. We needed this win, especially since we had two close losses to TM and G-P the previous two weeks,” said MMS coach Linda Luna.
Leading the Moreno scoring in the win was Ciara Garcia with 12 points. Andreana Garcia followed with four tallies. Yolanda Garza produced three points. Alexandria Salinas, Lorena Rosales, Sofia Galindo and Ashley Olivarez had two points in the victory.
“These girls have a lot to look forward to next year as eighth-graders,” Luna said.
The 8B team lost a close 14-11 tilt. Too many fouls helped the Lady Hornets add a few points that meant the difference. Amber Puebla contributed seven points to lead the team. Brittany Salazar and Tif’ni Puebla each had two to complete the Moreno scoring.
“The girls played a good game but in the end it was the fouls that caused our defeat,” said MMS coach Sonia Cano.
The 8A team got stung by the Lady Hornets, 29-18. The team’s record in district this year was 1-6.
Shooting woes caused problems for the MMS girls. Several close-in shots just would not fall.
“As a team we had several key missed shots under the basket. The wide-open under-the-basket shots have seemed to give us some problems this year,” said MMS coach Nidia Barrera.
“I know that the girls will work hard over the summer and next offseason to improve on their shot. I am very proud of the eighth-grade Lady Trojans.”
Lisa Tamez led the 8A scoring with 10 points. Alyssa Bates made three. Samantha Salazar and Priscilla Koenig each added two and Eddika Ortega had one point.
