In the four-way open race for Justice of the Peace, No. 2, Emi Pullin Riemenschneider and Veronica Rocha will face off in April in a runoff election. Although Riemenschneider was the front-runner with 321 votes to Rocha’s 257, neither candidate got the 50 percent needed to avoid a runoff. The two other candidates, John Moehr picked up 131 votes to Krystle Farrow’s 12. The JP No. 2 position was up for grabs following incumbent Cher Whitlow’s decision not to file to run.
In the contested race for county clerk, Ida M. Ramirez received 779 votes to Patty Baugh’s 370. County residents voted last year to separate the district and county clerk positions, so there was no incumbent in that position.
Other county officials who won their positions without any opposition in the Democratic Primary are Ruby Garcia, district clerk, 941; Stanley D. Tuttle, 265; Rod Bernal, 163; Lorraine Lopez, 359; and Johnny Karstedt, Democratic Party Chair,
In the only two local races on the Republican Party Primary, incumbent Louise Null Aduddell received 291 votes for county treasurer; and Walter Coumbe garnered 266. Neither candidate had an opponent.
After the election results were posted, the county judge said, overall, the campaign has been quiet.
“During the last election, there was more of a buzz and there was more interest,” Mascorro said. “I believe the low turnout was indicative of satisfaction.”
The county judge said his campaign pledge four years ago —to operate local county government with transparency— will continue.
“All decisions have been made in real time and we will continue to do that,” he said. “We don’t have to have 100 percent consensus every time and nobody is nodding yes in unison.”
During his campaign, Mascorro said most people wanted an update of the county’s accomplishments during the past four years.
“People voted for change and that change came to fruition,” Mascorro said. “I’m always going to have critics and will not get 100 percent of the vote. I see that as an opportunity to hear what their concerns are. I don’t feel like you have to win everybody over. By listening to the critics, we can learn and grow.”
The judge said he looks forward to the challenges of the next term.
“I’ve enjoyed doing this job,” he said. “It’s been a privilege every single day and I realize how lucky I am. I’ve been standing on the shoulders of many people and I’ve tried to fight for the best interests of the people and I will continue to fight so long as I’m county judge.”
