Murrell Foster guest speaker at Little Acorn Study Club

The Little Acorn Study Club met at the Three Rivers Dairy Queen on Nov. 20, with 16 members and two guests present. Our program was opened by President Mrs. Norma Newport.

President Newport introduced our speaker Executive Director of Three Rivers Chamber of Commerce Mr. Murrell Foster. Mr. Foster is a native of Gainesville. He has a master’s degree from East Texas State University, now Texas A&M -Commerce. He worked for the Fort Worth, Lubbock and Dallas Chambers of Commerce. He was the Tourism Director for the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau for 10 years. Then he moved to Austin where he eventually became the Director of the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau. Mr. Foster was Director of the Tourism Division of the City of Palms Springs, CA for eight years before retiring in 1997 and moved to Three Rivers.

Mr. Foster is the past president of the Discover Texas Association (now the Texas Travel industry Association) and also the Dallas/Fort Worth Area Tourism. He is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America. He originated and chairs the Three Rivers Tourism Committee and is the founder of the Three Rivers Salsa Festival and the Choke Canyon Birding Festival. He serves on the board of the Texas Travel Industry and was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Three Rivers Lions Club in 2000. He has been very busy serving on the nature tourism advisory committee of the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Mr. Foster spoke to the club about “the Future of Live Oak County and Three Rivers as I See it.” He reported the decorating of the city square and the lighting of the Square and Santa Claus on Dec. 1. The Fist State Bank will have their Christmas meal on Dec. 5, and everyone is invited to come and see the Christmas Tree Forest. What we would like to see in growth of our area. We have the prison system that employs many people and also Valero Refinery. We are a crossroad from San Antonio to the Valley. We are not far from Laredo or Beeville. We would like to attract more retirees and families that love country living. We soon hope to have high speed internet. We have a very busy highway that brings people in and out. He asked the ladies what they could contribute in ideas to help our community. He spoke very highly of the Little Acorn Study Club and other clubs as assets to our community.

The Chamber of Commerce Christmas meal for the entire community Dec. 7, at the High School Activity Center. If you have someone that can not travel or (shut-ins) call the Chamber and they will deliver meals to the shut-ins. There will be not carry outs this year, but it is open to everyone to come in; sit down and enjoy the company of our community neighbors. They are always looking for volunteers, so if you can volunteer call the Chamber of Commerce. Serving is from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The Community Choir will perform at 1:30 p.m., make it a priority to attend, you will enjoy being there.

He reported the Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be Jan. 12, in the Three Rivers High School Activity Center. The Salsa Festival will be April 4.

The Children’s Community Choir will perform at the First Baptist Church’s Activity Center Dec. 14, at 6 p.m.

Our hostesses for Nov. are Mrs. Jane-Anne Keese and Mrs. Joyce Kerr. Mrs. Keese decorated the table with a Fall theme of two beautiful scarecrows dressed for fall, standing on a bright orange tablecloth.

The ladies served sugar cookies cut from fall molds of acorns and leaves (in orange, yellow and brown) with beautifully cut sandwiches and mixed nuts. The club ladies were served a drink of their choice from the Dairy Queen.
