An exhibition of new paintings, entitled the San Souci Chronicles, by Louisiana artist Bernard Mattox, is currently on view at the Beeville Art Museum from through Dec. 30, concurrent with the Kermit Oliver exhibition.

The artist, who holds an MFA from Tulane University in New Orleans, and a BFA from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, lives and works in the San Souci Forest north of Covington, La.

After moving from New Orleans to Covington almost 20 years ago, Mattox stated, “What followed me here was a deep well of memories, associations, visual and mental images…evolving as a result of living some thirty years in a city so entrenched in mystery, decadence, spiritual archeology and architectural exotica. The residue of those memories is in the sculpture and paintings.”

The recipient of many honors and awards, including “Best of Show” in the Five State Juried Exhibit and a Fellowship from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Bernard Mattox’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Hooks-Epstein Gallery in Houston and the Carol Robinson Gallery in New Orleans.

The Beeville Art Museum is a teaching museum, dedicated to the concept of art as a positive force in the development of creative skills and thought. The Joe Barnhart Foundation has created comprehensive educational programs at the museum, including exhibitions of renowned artists and collections from museums, galleries and private collections from across the state, docent-conducted tours for students, lectures and workshops.

The Beeville Art Museum, located at 401 E. Fannin St., is open to the public 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. To contact the museum, call 358-8615.
