Nevel Calhoun “Cal” Tompkins Sr.,94, of Tivoli, died Sunday, July 18, 2010 after a short illness. He was a retired water superintendent at WCID #1 Refugio County, and a driver for Hall Butane. He was also a member of the Austwell-Tivoli Lions Club and the First Baptist Church of Tivoli.  A World War II veteran, he was an active student of the Civil War, World Wars I and II and their major participants. Shortly before his death, he was still actively hunting, gardening, and tending to his cows. 

He was born April 24, 1916 in Utica, Miss.

Survivors include his wife, Rose; three daughters, Margie (Tompkins) Kelso, Barbara (Tompkins) Eddy, and Lucy (Tompkins) Simmons; three sons, N.C. (Pete) Tompkins Jr., Tom Tompkins, and Michael Tompkins; two sisters, Nell Little and Helen Ford; 15 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Monday, July 19, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home in Victoria.

Graveside funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, July 20, at 10 a.m. at the Tivoli Cemetery, with the Rev. Robbie Jordan officiating.

Pallbearers were Jay Kelso, Darren Kelso, Danny Kelso, Paul Baker, Vince Simmons, Vance Simmons, Roddy Tompkins, Lance Tompkins, Kevin Tompkins, Chris Tompkins, and Skip Eddy.

Honorary pallbearers were Phillip Lee, Santos Huerta, Juan Cervantes, and the great grandsons.

Flowers are welcome, as are donations to the First Baptist Church of Tivoli in Cal’s name.
