GREGORY - Residents of a small, but close-knit community are grieving after a drive-by shooting early Saturday morning claimed the life of a Gregory man.

Adan Colunga, 37, was shot to death outside of a home in the 300 block of Avenue B at about 3 a.m. Saturday, Gregory Police Chief Robert Meager Jr. said.

Colunga was pronounced dead at the scene, and police officers are awaiting the results of his autopsy.

Daniel Rodriguez, 19, and Jacob Colunga, 26 - who are both from Portland - have been charged with murder. They were arrested by police officers after returning to the scene of the crime hours after the shooting.

“The vehicle that did the shooting left, and two-and-a-half hours later, the two suspects were back at the scene,” Meager said. “I have no idea why they went back. We’re still trying to determine the motive. It was not a random act; (Adan) was targeted.”

Jacob is not related to the victim.

Meager said the vehicle used during the crime - a mid-sized red SUV - has been recovered.

“A weapon has been recovered, but we’re still waiting on confirmation that it was the weapon used,” he added.

Texas Rangers and the San Patricio County Sheriff’s Department assisted Gregory police officers at the scene of the crime, and are continuing to help with the investigation.

“The suspects were charged within five hours of the crime, which is good,” Meager said. “We would not have been able to handle it as quickly if not for their help.”
